Keep His Nails Trimmed

Why should you cut your dog's toenails if wild dogs manage just fine without this being done? A few dog owners might say that if given the right exercise, your dog's toenails may wear down on their own. They think this because foxes and wolves have made it perfectly fine for many years and did not need humans to cut their nails for them.

Why should you cut your dog's toenails if wild dogs manage just fine without this being done? A few dog owners might say that if given the right exercise, your dog's toenails may wear down on their own. They think this because foxes and wolves have made it perfectly fine for many years and did not need humans to cut their nails for them.

It makes sense when you think about it that way - at least at first. However, that is at first. No matter how much exercise your dog gets it is not the same as it would be if he were to spend his entire life outside. Like most dog owners you probably let your dog spend most of his time indoors, which is not a place that will put a lot of wear and tear on his toes or nails.

Another piece of the argument against allowing your dog's nails to file down naturally is the fact that most dog owners discourage the dog scratching indiscriminately. With this the dog won't be able to wear down his nails.

The dogs that come closest to the ideal are farm dogs, which are becoming fewer and fewer with every passing year. They spend most of their time outdoors, and do a lot of running and even scratching. Their nails still need care and your dog is no different.

Every responsible dog owner should be checking their pet's paws on a regular basis, and taking care of their nails is just one part of it. Even if your dog manages to get enough exercise on the right surface to keep his nails short most of the time, it may not be enough. Nails can break and even splinter, and that can be very painful for your dog if you let it go any length of time without a proper trimming.

Trim your dog's nails - he needs to be taken care of from head to toe!
