It is plain old simple nature for a dog to want to chew on anything that they can get their teeth around. It also is an activity that allows a dog to have fun. It is self-rewarding for them, as well.

The fact is chewing comes natural to dogs and any type of chewing can be destructive because dogs have forceful jaws and strong teeth that can damage most any item.
