Dogs have a different metabolism than humans, and cannot eat everything a person can eat. For the safety of your dog, you need to make sure they never consume any of the following:

1. Bones: Our whole lives we have been mislead. In cartoons, dogs are always carrying a bone and hiding it in the backyard. The truth is bones can cause serious damage to your dog's digestive system. The damage is caused when bones splinter and lacerate their insides.

Chicken bones and fish bones should never be fed to a dog. Even the famous green dental bones and rawhide bones have caused internal injury to dogs. When it comes to bones, your safest bet is to find thick bones that are unlikely to splinter. There isn't a specific type of bone I can recommend, because all bones can be dangerous and there simple isn't one single bone out there that is guaranteed to be safe, but basically, the thicker the bone, the better.

2. Mushrooms: You may like mushrooms, but for your canine friend mushrooms can be deadly. Mushrooms contain toxins that may send your dog into shock.

3. Raw fish: Raw fish, if given to your dog often enough, will cause seizures and can be deadly. This is caused from a vitamin B deficiency.

4. Caffeine (no chocolate, no coffee, etc.): Most people know not to feed chocolate to their dogs, but they may be surprised to see coffee on the list too. Caffeine affects your dog's heart and nervous system, and can be deadly.

5. Alcohol: Dogs can die from alcohol consumption, just as people can. It's more likely for your pet to die from consuming alcohol, because of their body size. A person can (usually) tell when they've had too much to drink. A dog cannot. Not only that, but dogs typically don't eat as often as a person does, so they are consuming alcohol on an empty stomach.

6. Human medications: Sometimes your vet will tell you it's ok to give certain human prescriptions to your dog. Never assume it is ok to give them anything without asking your vet first. And, never give a different amount than the vet prescribes. Remember, your dog's body weight is much lower than your dogs. That tiny pill can cause huge harm.

7. Macadamia nuts: The toxic effects of Macadamia nuts are not clear to anyone. They are known to cause problems when your dog eats them, even if they only eat a few.

I've just given you 7 of several substances that are dangerous for your dog to ingest. Dog poisoning is serious, and sadly, very common. Hundreds of thousands of dogs die every year from poisoning. A lot of times, it is because owners aren't knowledgeable about what their dog can and cannot have.

Owners accidentally giving toxins to their dogs aren't the only cause of poisoning, dogs also get into things they shouldn't. Owners need to be more careful about educating themselves, and keeping dangerous substances out of reach.
